Food Waste

Food waste describes the avoidable waste of edible food. In contrast to food loss, however, waste mostly occurs in retail or among consumers due to poor planning or oversupply.

The targeted use of plant protection products not only prevents food loss, but can also improve the harvested quality, shelf life and thus storability, for example in the case of apples or onions which in turn prevents premature rotting and discarding. Biocides also prevent food losses during storage and transport, for example through mold or pest infestation. Modern breeding can also prevent food loss and waste through more resistant varieties.
